This information is presented to you as information only and is not designed for self-assessment or self-treatment. Never go it alone. Find a professional to help you on your way to perfect health.

This is one big newsletter and it still doesn't contain everything we've recently uncovered. So, hereís whatís in this edition:

Beating Cancer - Playing the Odds

I received three letters, coincidentally, from women who had tested positive for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). All three were convinced they were going to get cervical cancer.

Iím sure weíve all heard people talking about how they have the "gene" for cancer or itís in their family so there is nothing they can do about it. Then there are those who say "Everything causes cancer," therefore there is nothing you can do about it.

This last one is a total copout. Anyone making this claim is simply disavowing any responsibility for his/her health care. This person is a "victim" by choice; you can choose to be a "survivor."

Perhaps there is nothing you can do about your HPV or your genes, but what about the things you can do something about? When it comes to ones health, I often wish people would say the Serenity Prayer daily:

God, grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Accept the gene, accept the virus, but focus on those things you can change. Genetic disposition, or being diagnosed with HPV, is NOT a death sentence. It does not mean certainty. The Linus Pauling institute, a leading research institute investigating the workings of the immune system, states emphatically that diet and lifestyle override any genetic disposition.

There are no guarantees. Life gives us no guarantees. Healthy people get sick and die. But you CAN lower your odds of getting cancer, and raise your odds of beating it if you have it.

Since my family has a few physicians in it, I will let you in on something: Doctors play the odds. Why donít you?

When a doctor gives out a drug, heís playing the odds. Most doctors, over a period of time, begin to prefer certain drugs to others because of their personal experience: one seems to work better for them. I remember meeting someone in AOLís Cancer Support Chat Room
who could not understand why he was getting one protocol for prostate cancer and his friend was getting another. He asked, "Isnít a protocol a protocol?"

He refused to accept the simple answer: Doctors have their preferences. If there were a cure, a 100% cure, yes, then there would be one protocol. But there is no cure and doctors are left to their preferences, though keep in mind that these preferences are not based entirely upon hard science, but rather from what theyíve observed and from their own prejudices.

Doctors play the odds when they give you a prognosis. When they tell a patient s/he has six months to a year to live, more than playing God, they are playing the odds: the average person with this condition lives six months to a year.

The Merck Manual plays the odds. Throughout this book it tells you your odds of contracting a particular disease.

Always keep in mind that these odds are based upon the statistics gathered in the past for the "average" person. The way to beat the odds are: refuse to be average. There is no such thing as a guarantee in this life time. No one can guarantee you will not get cancer, however, you CAN lower your odds

Do not focus on the things you cannot change. Do not whine that itís in your genes while standing in line at McDonaldís ready to supersize your order. Focus on the things you can control, those things you can change.

These are the things you can control:

What you eat.
What you drink.
What you think.
How you live.
Where you live.
Where you work.
Who you live with.
Who you hang with.

Do you have HPV and want to avoid cervical cancer? I wrote back to all these three women telling them that nutritional studies show that eating one to two cups of red raspberries a week reversed [caused apoptosis or normal cell death] in both the pre-cancerous cells of the uterus caused by HPV and in the HPV.

Play the odds.

Insurance companies play the odds. Have you ever seen a cancer map? You have to be very close to someone in the insurance industry to see one. There is one for your city. It shows in color codes your odds of getting certain cancers depending on where you live.

The insurance companies have been collecting data for years and I thank my sources for getting me some of their findings, because they will never publish them. They know things they donít want you to know, that way they have better odds than you do, and by playing those odds, they make money.

Allow me let you in on a few things insurance companies know.

A person who gets a massage regularly, once a month minimum, has 10% the health care costs of the average person. This same figure applies to people who meditate, perform Tai Chi, Qigong, or Yoga. People eating strict organic diets have health care costs even lower, depending on how long theyíve been following this regimen. Vegetarians live a bit longer than meat eaters, but they consistently give birth to babies with lower birth weights. Vegans (vegetarians who do not touch ANY product from animals, including honey) have fewer cancers (less than a quarter) than meat eaters, and less than half the cancers of regular vegetarians. (Please keep in mind that if you are going to change your diet dramatically and take up a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle that you must do a lot of research into proper balancing of meals and supplementation.)

Want more stats?

A Norwegian study showed that women who exercise a minimum 4 hours a per week or more cut their risks of cancer (not to mention heart disease) by 37% compared to the more sedentary women. [What You Must Know to Overcome Cancer, Alpert Sanchez, Ed.S, Ph.D]

In China, the greater the amount of Green Tea drunk, the fewer cancers (prostate cancer is unknown among those who drink heavy amounts of green tea.) P.S. It also helps you to burn fats; great diet aid!

Here are some more facts already published at this site (

Hot dogs were linked to childhood leukemia in a 1994 study by the UCLA Medical School. Have they been pulled from school lunches yet? Play the odds, avoid foods with nitrates and nitrites. Or if you must have that hot dog or lunchmeat, drink two or three cups of Green Tea with that meal (it turns carcinogens into harmless chemicals).

Partially hydrogenated oils have been linked to Type II diabetes, skin cancer, hardening of the arteries, and immune disorders. Read labels.

Processed sugars, processed flour, and processed salt have all been linked to immune dysfunction. You can avoid these, but you have to be on your toes. The best rule of thumb is this: the more hands that have touched your food, the less healthy it is. (And if you think "fortified" foods are any better, think again. Studies show that starving animals will live longer than animals fed fortified foods.)

People who eat seven servings of tomatoes per week have fewer stomach, esophageal, and throat cancers. People who eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Chinese cabbage, bok choi, cabbage, cauliflower, etc) regularly have much fewer cancers than those who donít.

According to the NCI, taking the RDA of Folic Acid and Vitamin B6 had a 70% less likely chance of colon cancer.

People with chronic constipation have a nearly 80% greater chance of colorectal cancer than those who have regular bowel movements. Detox that colon yearly and experience a better than 90% decrease in your chances of colorectal cancer.

A low fat, high-fiber diet decreased their risk of cancer by 16% to 24%.

Just two drinks (liquor) a day can increase breast cancer risk by 40% and three drinks might bring it as high as 70%, with pre-menopausal women at the highest risk.

Overweight women are at twice the risk of breast cancer as those within their ideal range.

Blood samples from around the world showed that the levels of selenium in blood serum are highest in Asia and Latin America, and lowest in America and Europe. America and Europe have breast cancer rates four to five times higher than those other countries. (Selenium has a toxic limit. You just need a little.)

In the book, Dressed to Kill, by Singner and Grismaiser, showed that your breast cancer risk can climb as high as 70% by wearing a bra. Become a hippy!

The Middle Eastern diet is much higher in fat than our Western diet, yet they experience 40% fewer breast cancers. Why? They donít use corn oil; they use olive oil exclusively.

Your health is in your hands. Play the odds.

Is your job killing you? Quit. Donít tell me how you need this job and your family will starve. If it kills you, yup, youíre family is gonna starve. If you are in a lousy relationship, end it. Do not let a bad relationship turn into illness. If you live in a toxic area, move, especially if you or someone in your family is sensitive to the toxins there. If you are depressed, neurotic, or involved in thinking that keeps spiraling downward, find a hypnotherapist, a sociologist, or a psychiatrist. Find help to stop these thoughts.

Learn to meditate, to dance, to do yoga or tai chi.

Do what you love and love what you do and you increase your odds of beating cancer, and a lot other diseases too.

For those of you who say you cannot afford to move or to quit your job, please ask yourself, what is your life worth?

When defending a person for a capital crime, in his younger years, F Lee Bailey, when asked by his client what his defense would cost, responded, "How much do you have? What is your net worth?" He charged his clients exactly what they had, exactly what they were worth. "To save your life, it will cost you everything your life is worth." Makes sense.

As an aside, Iíve met people in AOLís Cancer Support Chat Room
who tell me they canít afford organic food. I usually ask if they can afford the chemo? Chemo is much more expensive than organic food and we do not get sick because we donít have chemo flowing through our bodies. Pesticides have been thoroughly and definitely linked to breast cancer. According to the Merck Manual, if you live long enough you will get breast cancer [mainly because the average diet is filled with pesticides].

So itís like the motor oil commercials on TV: either pay me now (organic foods/good motor oil) or pay me later (chemotherapy/complete engine overhaul).

One more thing. Does this mean that you can never go out for a few drinks, eat some great junk foods, or chow down on some French fries? There is a saying among naturopaths: Itís not what you do Saturday night that counts, but what you do the rest of the week. Go have some fun, but even then, play the odds: before going out to party, take some antioxidants to prevent the damage the night will bring on.

What is your life worth?

Common Drug Interactions with Foods

Weíre all warned about drug interactions. There are so many drugs on the market today that physicians have to consult a large database of possible interactions before prescribing a drug. However, even more common than drug interactions with other drugs are food interactions with other drugs. A bit less common are vitamin and supplement interactions with drugs.

Here is a small list of foods (supplements) that just donít mix well with certain drugs. If you know of some interactions with common foods yourself, please send them to us.

Grapefruit juice interferes with calcium channel blockers like Procardia (a heart medication). Grapefruit juice mixed with antihistamines can cause serious heart problems. Grapefruit juice can also interact with felodipine (Plendil, Renedil), and carbamazepime (Tegretol). If you are a heavy drinker of grapefruit juice or eat grapefruits, tell your doctor the moment he prescribes you something.

Anti-depressants which are MAO inhibitors (St Johnís Wort is one) can cause a potentially high blood pressure rise (at worst) and headaches (at best) when mixed with certain foods containing Tyramine. Aged foods, chocolate, sausage, and cheeses all contain Tyramine. For more on foods containing Tyramine, see
Alternative Cancer Therapies, after the section on Hydrazine Sulfate
there is a warning about MAO inhibitors, of which Hydrazine Sulfate is one.

High levels of Soy protein can interfere with the effectiveness of Synthroid, a common thyroid medication for an under-active thyroid.

Caffeinated drinks do not mix well with certain antibiotics, such as Cipro, or the antacid drugs Tagament, Zantac and Pepcid.

Coumadin users should not overindulge in foods high in vitamin K or take large doses of Vitamin E. Vitamin K makes coumadin less effective and Vitamin E makes it too effective and can cause you to bleed to death (internally).

Editorís Note:
I would no more put coumadin in my body than Rat Poison. Why? They are the same thing. Coumadin is one of the main ingredients in rat poison. If you need to thin your blood, please find a Naturopath who can help you by using natural blood thinners, like high doses of vitamin E, for example.

A Healthy Dose Of Laughter
From Steve Goodier's RICHES OF THE HEART

I read that a child laughs 400 times a day on the average, while an adult laughs only 15 times each day. Which is puzzling since laughter feels so good and is so good for us!

You may know the benefits of laughter on the mind and spirit, but are you aware of how much a good laugh can help you physically? Norman Cousins used to say that laughter is so beneficial for your body that it is like "inner jogging."

Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic Health Letter, March 1993) reports that laughter aids breathing by disrupting your normal respiration pattern and increasing your breathing rate. It can even help clear mucus from your lungs.

Laughter is also good for your heart. It increases circulation and improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout your body.

A good laugh helps your immune system fight off colds, flu and sinus problems by increasing the concentration of immunoglobulin A in your saliva. And it may help control pain by raising the levels of certain brain chemicals (endorphins).

Furthermore, it is a natural stress reliever. Have you ever laughed so hard that you doubled over, fell off your chair, spit out your food or wet your pants? You cannot maintain muscle tension when you are laughing!

The good news is that you are allowed more than 15 laughs a day! Go ahead and double the dose and make it 30 times today. (You may begin to notice immediate improvement in your relationships!) Then double it again! You are bound to feel better, you will cope with problems more effectively and people will enjoy being around you.

Laughter: itís just good medicine!

Young Man Accidentally Discovers A Method to Reduce Scarring

In Scotland, David Stockdale, 18, was working on a science project when he stumbled upon a protein called decorin, which appears to make scars heal and fade more quickly.

He was looking at scars in people with Afro-Caribbean or Asian backgrounds, wondering what made them look so unsightly, when he made the mistake of using 200 times the correct amount of acid in an experiment he had designed.

Right now, his research is undergoing clinical trials in Switzerland and won him the Young Scientist of the Year award from the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

Another Look At Tamoxifen

Does Tamoxifenís benefits outweigh the side effects? Iíve made some minor changes to the Breast Cancer article and added Raloxifene. Youíll want to check this out.

Ellagic Acid - Beating Cancer Naturally

Yes, I introduced you to ellagic acid in the past, but weíve uncovered even more information that we must pass on to you.

Apparently the Hollings Cancer Institute at the U of South Carolina is having a field day with this natural substance (found in red raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and some nuts, listed here in the order of their amounts, red raspberries having the most). At the Hollings Cancer Institute, they not only conducted a nine year study on the properties of ellagic acid, they are also conducting a double blind (neither patient nor physician knows whoís taking what) study involving 500 cervical cancer patients.

Initial research demonstrated the following:

1. Ellagic acid stops cancer cells from dividing in 48 hours.
2. Ellagic acid causes normal cell death (apoptosis) within 72 hours in cases of breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, colon and prostate cancers.
3. Ellagic acid prevents the destruction of the p53 gene that leads to cancer.
4. HPV (human papilloma virus) exposed to ellagic acid from red raspberries experienced apoptosis (normal cell death).
5. Consuming one cup (150 grams) of red raspberries per day prevents the development of cancer cells.

From Dr Glen Halvorsonís Book, Chemopreventive Properties of Phytochemicals, we learn that ellagic acid:

* is anti-bacterial and destroys the H. pylori bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers,
* protects the liver and liver function,
* binds with carcinogens (chemicals that cause cancer) making them inactive,
* prevents carcinogens from binding to DNA,
* and reduces glucose levels (aids in management of diabetes).

Raspberries contain the highest amounts of ellagic acid, and it doesnít matter if the fruit is boiled, backed, canned, sugared, dehydrated, or fresh, the ellagic acid is still potent.

I found that one of the most amazing things about raspberries is that one cup a week stops prostate cancers (all prostate cancers) from growing for one week.

Now, the researchers at the Hollings Cancer Institute have created a patent-pending process of extracting this acid from the seeds of the raspberries. Ellagic acid is destroyed in the stomach. They are also working on a process by which the acid will not be destroyed in the stomach but will pass on through to the small intestines where it will be absorbed.

There is a multilevel marketing company that claims to have also created a form of ellagic acid that can be taken orally, it is called Ellagic Insurance Formula, and in addition to containing ellagic acid, it also contains OPCís (like Pycnogenolģ) which are potent flavanoids (like Resveratrol) that act as antioxidants, concentrated Green Tea, and vitamins C, E, A and selenium. This is, if it works, a very powerful cancer fighter and preventative measure. Iím sure if you type in Ellagic Insurance Formula at any internet search engine, youíll find a half a ton of sites selling it.

Please note: if you are eating raspberries for their ellagic acid you must eat them on an empty stomach, before you eat anything else, or eat them in yogurt, as the curdling of the yogurt in the stomach will protect them. If your fruit sits in your stomach too long, because you've eaten something prior, stomach acid will destroy its healthful properties.

SCIENTISTS have discovered that the purring of cats is a "natural healing mechanism" that has helped inspire the myth that they have nine lives.

Cats - wild and domestic - purr because it helps their bones and organs to heal and grow stronger, say researchers who have analyzed the purring of different feline species. This, they say, explains why cats survive falls from high buildings and why they are said to have "nine lives". Exposure to similar sound frequencies is known to improve bone density in humans.

New Hope For Brain Cancers

Actually, this new chemotherapy has shown promise in reversing all cancers, even multiple myeloma (bone cancer) and pancreatic cancer, however, for brain cancers, this is the first chemotherapy to break the blood brain barrier.

You, my readers of this lil ol newsletter, are getting the first look at this new drug. It is not posted at my web site. I am still researching it and trying to understand how it functions (I knew I should have paid attention in my biochemistry lectures), and Iím reading the scientistís own book on how this discovery came about.

For a packet of information on this new chemotherapy, call 800-960-6760. For $6.95 youíll get a basic packet of information, and for $24.95 youíll get Dr Garnettís book (the one Iím presently reading) and a video. This information is priceless, and though I donít quite understand everything that Dr Garnett writes in his book, his writing is clear, precise, and nearly magical. The illustrations are paintings by his daughter.

To sum up what I know so far, it took Dr Merrill Garnett 30 years of intensive investigation to come up with this new compound. Dr Garnett, by the way, is a dentist. After being released from the Navy, it hit him that he wanted more than ever to research cancer and find a cure. From the very beginning, he wanted to do this in the least toxic possible way.

This came about when he realized that, "The tumor is neutral. . . ." Anyone whoís had cancer does not view cancer this way. Itís a disease, itís trying to kill me, itís bad, itís filthy, it's horrible. But as a scientist, he realized that it was not bad, not malevolent, but something to be understood. It was with this attitude that, "I thought I might as well find out how this thing was put together. It was at this point that I determined to restore the normal, rather than poison the abnormal."

Almost as an aside, he states: "I always knew there would have to be a departure from the poison-of-the-month club."

Now cancer is simply a normal cell that has gone awry. Something went wrong in itís genetic code and, cut off from the correct path, it begins to grow out of control. In a healthy body, these cells are quickly destroyed by an alert immune system. But if the immune system is busy battling toxins, food and other allergies, heavy metals and the like, or is shut down because of stress, then the cancer takes off.

Dr Garnett states that if these sick cells just died, weíd have no problem. The problem is, they are sick, they are weak, but they are very much alive and they go out of their way to hide from the immune system. Like every cell in your body, cancer cells want to live. They have a survival instinct.

So Dr Garnett began reading Otto Warburg who was the first to describe the metabolic processes of cancer cells (and was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine). The trouble was, Warburg had yet to be translated into English. So, with a German/English dictionary in hand, Dr Garnett set out to re-discover what Warburg had discovered a decade earlier.

When he finally understood Warburgís work, he felt firmly within his entire being that the process by which cancerís energy is cut off could be reversed, and this became his ultimate goal for the next three decades. Cancer is a "low" living form. It loves glucose (sugar) and metabolizes without oxygen (like many other primitive life forms including a host of bacteria and viruses). At that time his journey began, the conventional approach to cancer was, as he relates: "Öto stop the growth of cancer we are forced to stop the entire organism in its tracks and bring it to the point of death." At the end of this journey, Dr Garnett states: "Weíre going to put back what is missing in a non-toxic way; weíre going to complete the electrogenetic pulse thatís found in all higher living forms, in our cells, and in our physiology."

His 30-year journey reminds me of Thomas Edisonís search for the perfect filament. At one point Edison was asked if he ever got tired of failing. He responded that he hadnít failed, but on the contrary, he knew thousands of things that didnít work. Edison tried over ten thousand filaments before arriving at tungsten. At one point, Dr Garnett realized that his concoction would need a metal base. Like Edison, there were many metals to choose from, except that unlike Edisonís experiments, at the cellular level, metals change their properties depending on what theyíre attached to. Also unlike Edisonís experiments which could produce only one result, Dr Garnett, along the way, published some of his results that lent further understanding to epilepsy and diabetes, leaving open the door to their eventual cures.

Dr Garnett eventually found his metal: paladium. It costs three times the price of gold. He found his energy: he created a molecular electronic device. The name of his chemotherapy is Poly-MVA. Poly for polynucleotide reductase (Iíll explain this as soon as I understand it) and MVA stands for minerals, vitamins, and amino acids.

It is both water and fat soluble, which means it can cross the blood brain barrier. It is a powerful antioxidant that actually turns the toxins released by cancer into energy. Whereas standard chemotherapy drains most people of energy, people taking Poly-MVA find increased energy, improved appetite, weight gain, and increased strength. They also require less pain medication. To paraphrase the car commercial, "No, this is not your fatherís chemotherapy."

Before I leave you and go back to researching this wonderful new therapy, I want to you know that there is no known toxicity level. It is available over-the-counter. You may go on line and read hundreds of testimonials from people whoíve conquered their cancers using Poly-MVA, many of whom were told to go home and get their things in order.

Do not expect your doctor to know about this new therapy. The patent is owned by Dr Garnett and his family, and Poly-MVA is sold by a little company out of San Diego that is run by two men who both lost their wives to cancer: Dr Albert Sanchez, founder of AMARC and Gary Matson, chief cook and bottle washer.

One more thing, Poly-MVA is not cheap. It costs a lot less than that chemotherapy your HMO is pushing (even though it costs just pennies to make) but Poly-MVA is made from something that costs more than gold. The average treatment lasts 4 months. Here is the protocol:

2 tsp 4 times a day for one week.
2 tsp twice a day for 12 weeks.
1 tsp twice a day until symptoms and tumors are gone
Ĺ to 1 tsp daily maintenance.

This entire protocol, for four months costs just right around $3,000.00. Now, there are all sorts of rip-offs out there charging less or more than the people at Advanced Medical Research Center, the people who distribute Poly-MVA. Theyíve turned up a lot of garbage labeled Poly-MVA that isnít even close. So please be careful. AMARC will get it to you as cheaply as they can; they will follow your progress, they want to help, and they need your feedback.

Again, call 800-960-6760 for Poly-MVA or for their packet of information. And go visit Then find the link for the testimonials. You might get lucky and read about Steve Chaney, Mushtaq Ahmed, and James Broullier who were given up as hopeless and were assigned to a hospice. With Poly-MVA they became the first patients ever to get up and leave that hospice.

Stay tuned for more on Poly-MVA.

 Stops Metastatic Bone Cancer
But . . ..

Clodronate is a drug we wrote about in our second edition of the Wellness Directory of Minnesotaô. We didnít list it in Alternative Cancer Therapies for two reasons, it doesnít kill/fight cancer and it isnít available in the US.

Then why bring it up? It does stop metastatic bone disease, the actual cause of death in most breast cancer patients who do not respond to traditional therapies. Itís bad enough being told by a physician that you have breast cancer, but when he tells you itís spread to the bones, that is terrifying, because now your odds of success have shrunk drastically.

Why is this drug not available in the US? You figure it out. Itís cheap, it works, it has no side effects. But the good news is, you can order it from offshore companies, and right now Iím in the process of finding out who and where they are. In the meanwhile, you can read about clodronate at: Clodronate

All the people listed, besides being men, had heart attacks, and except for Tommy Lasorda, they all died of heart attacks. But we left one out:

On the last day of filming of The Misfits, Clark Gable said
"Christ, I'm glad this picture's finished. She [Monroe]
damn near gave me a heart attack."
The next day, Gable suffered a massive heart attack
and died 11 days later.

Blessings to all,
